On May 7, 1944, it was announced that Pfc. Jesse M. Miles of Dentsville was awarded the Purple Heart for wounds received in Italy. He had received his education at Dentsville high school and was with the quartermaster at Camp Croft prior to his army career, receiving basic training at Camp Phillips, Kansas. He was the son of Mrs. Lillie Miles of Spartanburg, and the brother of Mrs. D. D. Motley of Gonzales Gardens.
