Elgin Woman Struck by Train

savpurvis

In December of 1968, 47-year-old Mrs. Leroy Cherry was hit by a Seaboard Coastline passenger train in her vehicle. Mrs. Cherry, who lived in Elgin, was driving across the Decker Blvd. crossing in Dentsville when the train struck her. Her car was pushed six-tenths of a mile away by the impact. Witnesses of the accident later said that the crossing guard signals were operating at the time of the accident.

It was far from the first fatal accident at this location, and a hearing was called immediately to propose improvements to the crossing. Mrs. Cherry was survived by her parents, T.N. and Florence Kilpatrick Middlebrooks; her husband, Leroy Cherry; two daughters, Mrs. David Gainey and Mrs. James Kyzer; two sons, Lawrence Roy Cherry and Stanley Wayne Cherry; a sister, Mrs. E.D. Derrick, Jr.; and two brothers, Everette Middlebrooks and Esco Middlebrooks.
