1929 saw an expansion of the Columbia Public Library. The library was moved from its previous location on Main Street to the Woodrow house at Washington and Sumter streets, and the total book circulation was more than a third greater than any previous year. It opened for longer hours, starting at 9 a.m. and closing at 6:30 p.m. The most noteworthy change was the addition of the card catalogue, which gave an alphabetical list of the books, authors, and subjects to be found in the library. Despite the library's increase in business, only one new staff member was added, Mrs. C.I. Dial.
